history of bacd

BACD was formed in 1969 by four destinations (Bournemouth, Brighton, London and Scarborough) who shared the dream of working together and could see the benefits from collaborating to generate and refer conference business between themselves.

Since then membership has grown to encompass many of the leading conference destinations in the British Isles which between them represent some 3000 conference and meetings venues.

In 2000 BACD was appointed to run the Executive Office of the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO). ABPCO is the only association in the British Isles whose membership comprises exclusively professional conference organisers and was formed in 1981 to maintain and enhance quality standards within the meetings industry.

In 2005, full membership was extended to include the national tourist boards, realising BACD’s dream of a membership comprising the most experienced and knowledgeable practitioners in destination marketing and management in the country.

BACD also has an affiliate programme providing quality information and valuable marketing opportunities for individuals and organisations associated with the conference and business tourism industry.
